THE BAJA STORY
Baja was started in 1992 by owner/executive chef Dr. Jeff Mogalian. Having grown up in Southern California and surfing and eating in Baja California, Dr. Jeff fell in love with Coastal Mexican cuisine. Moving to Northern California it was hard to find coastal Mexican and impossible to find the beloved Fish Tacos. So what’s a DeadHead/surfer/ dentist/ chef supposed to do? Open the freshest, tastiest most authentic Baja-style Mexican restaurant on Piedmont Ave and 18 years later continue the tradition with award winning food.

We, at Baja Taqueria, believe in a simple formula; serve fresh, innovative, delicious healthy food prepared daily. Create a fun and clean environment that our customers enjoy. Honor our staff in keeping a respectable living wage and fun environment to work in. Have in impact on important environment and social concerns.
Our food is prepared fresh daily with the best, freshest ingredients available. We strive to be innovative as well as delicious. We were the first fish tacos in the Bay Area. The first Lobster Burrito. The first International Wrap in the East Bay. Many of our “staples” are organic and that number will continue to increase. We make our salsas daily, cook most of our meats and fish to order, and prepare other items throughout the day in order to maintain freshness. We will customize any order to our customers exact needs. We know you will taste the difference here at Baja.
Baja is a colorful and fun environment for the whole community. We strive to maintain absolute cleanliness and work safety at all times. We are an Oakland Green Certified Business which means we take our environment seriously. Our wall art is from the owners years of collecting rock and roll art and collectible artifacts from around the world. Our Monday night “Bluegrass Taco Jam” is nationally recognized and has existed for over 18 years.
Our staff is always friendly and helpful with any questions or concerns. Since opening in 1992 many of our staff have been with us since the beginning. Most have been with us for 5-10 years. We believe in taking good care of our staff who will in turn take good care of our customers.
